BHETA works to promote our members' interests in a number of areas. In 2023, our activity fell in six main areas:1. EXTENDED PRODUCER RESPONSIBILITY (EPR)The implementation of charges to suppliers under EPR has been delayed by a year to 2025. BHETA lobbied the Government department, DEFRA, to request the abandonment or delay of proposed changes to the packaging system.2. RETAILER LOBBYINGBHETA lobbied various retailers in 2023, whose payments fall beyond terms or those who seek to impose new terms outside of agreed trading agreements.3. EXPORTBHETA as members of EPUK continue to engage with government ministers to seek further support and assistance for UK exporters.4. UKCA & BUILDING PRODUCTSBHETA lobbied the Government about the two tier system of product labelling that is the new UK default. In August, the DTB indefinitely delayed the requirement for the costly switch from CE marking to UKCA marking for most products. However. the DLUHC announced that the indefinite delay does not apply to the construction products sector.5. BLADED ARTICLES RETAILINGThe Offensive Weapons Act 2019 was implemented by the Home Office in April 2022, treating blunt cutlery knives as dangerous weapons. BHETA continues to monitor the situation and has engaged AgeChecked as an export Business Support Provider to provide webinar updates.6. ELECTRICAL PRODUCTSThe BHETA EOSC Committee lobbied the Government in the following areas, either individually or through the JTA:
- UK Product safety review consultation
- Button cell battery safety consultation
- PFAS restriction proposals
- The new RoHS structures
- WEEE consultation
