BHETA's new Marketplace Working Groups have got off to a strong start, with the first meetings bringing together marketplace professionals from some of the UK's leading home improvement, housewares and consumer goods brands to share experiences, discuss common challenges and build valuable peer networks.
Launched following the success of BHETA's Marketplaces Day, the initiative is designed to help members navigate the fast-moving world of online marketplaces through collaboration, knowledge sharing and practical discussion. Six groups, each comprising around five participants, held their inaugural meetings on 21 May.
Participating companies included Bostik, Yale, Burgon &Ball, Einhell, Rayware, Addis, Monument Tools, Bluestem Group, Grunwerg, AssaAbloy, Charles Bentley, Ultimate Products, Minky, Sherwin Williams, The DRH Collection, T&G and Spectrum Brands. The programme has also benefited from the support and expertise of BHETA business support providers RT7 Digital, TymeOnline and Nivtar.
The initial sessions focused on introductions, identifying common priorities and establishing the foundations for ongoing peer-to-peer support. Participants will be able to discuss the opportunities and challenges presented by marketplace channels, from platform management and advertising to account health, content optimisation and future growth strategies.
The concept was inspired by feedback from members who recognised that while marketplaces offer significant growth opportunities, they can also be complex and, at times, isolating to manage.
Member Feedback
As one BHETA member involved in an existing marketplace peer group previously explained: "One of the biggest challenges when working with Amazon is how isolating it can feel. Hearing different approaches to shared issues, understanding what has worked well for others and exchanging experiences creates meaningful knowledge sharing and removes much of that sense of isolation."
Another participant described similar benefits: "Most problems that crop up, someone in the group has already dealt with and can share what worked, which saves time and avoids repeat mistakes. It also helps me stay close to new developments on the platform."
The Marketplace Working Groups are intended to become self-supporting communities that meet monthly, creating a trusted environment where members can exchange ideas, discuss challenges and share successes with peers facing similar issues. BHETA's role is to facilitate the formation of the groups and ensure they operate within appropriate competition law guidelines, before allowing members to shape discussions according to their own priorities.
BHETA Sector Manager, Steve Edwards commented: "The enthusiasm and openness shown in these first meetings has been fantastic to see. The quality of discussion demonstrated exactly why we launched the initiative. There is a huge amount of expertise within the BHETA membership, and by bringing marketplace professionals together in a structured but informal environment we can help members learn from one another, avoid common pitfalls and accelerate their marketplace growth."
He added: "This is very much a member-led initiative. The first meetings confirmed that there is a real appetite for regular collaboration and knowledge sharing, and we look forward to seeing these groups develop over the coming months."
