Amazon Reports Strong Q3 Results with 11% Sales Increase

Amazon.com reported a robust performance for its third quarter ending September 30, 2024, with net sales climbing 11% year-over-year to $158.9 billion. This growth included the impact of foreign exchange rates, which reduced the figure by $0.2 billion. Sales in the International segment (includes UK) grew by 12% YoY.

Key Financial Highlights:

  • Net Sales: Increased to $158.9 billion, up from $143.1 billion in Q3 2023.
  • North America: Sales grew by 9% year-over-year to reach $95.5 billion.
  • International Segment: Saw a 12% sales increase to $35.9 billion.
  • AWS Segment: Amazon Web Services (AWS) sales surged by 19% to $27.5 billion.

Amazon's operating income rose sharply, reaching $17.4 billion, compared to $11.2 billion in the same period last year. Growth was strong across all segments:

  • North America: Operating income climbed to $5.7 billion, up from $4.3 billion in Q3 2023.
  • International Segment: Operating income hit $1.3 billion, reversing a $0.1 billion loss in Q3 2023.
  • AWS: Operating income soared to $10.4 billion from $7.0 billion in Q3 2023.

Net income also saw significant gains, rising to $15.3 billion, or $1.43 per diluted share, compared to $9.9 billion, or $0.94 per diluted share, a year ago.
