BHETA associate member, Wastepack is providing updates for BHETA members on the latest government consultations on Defra’s Resource and Waste Strategy, which was launched at the end of 2018. Wastepack provides a range of compliance services and can also take on members’ legal obligations in this area in order to avoid issues of non-compliance and possible prosecution. In particular, it is keen to draw attention to four implications which could easily have an impact on BHETA member businesses. These are:
- EXTENDED PRODUCER RESPONSIBILITY – Reforming the Packaging Waste regulations includes proposals that will require obligated producers pay for the full net cost of collecting, treating and recycling of packaging, which will see at least a six-fold rise in the cost of compliance.
- PLASTIC PACKAGING TAX – HMRC is looking to introduce a tax on all plastic packaging with less than a 30% minimum recycled content.
- HOUSEHOLD AND BUSINESS RECYCLING COLLECTIONS – Requires businesses to segregate recycled material from general waste streams.
- DEPOSIT RETURN SCHEME – Defra are seeking views on the implementation of Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) in the UK that will be funded by obligated producers.
The consultations are running until 12 – 13 May and Wastepack is holding a series of webinars exclusively for BHETA members on all the details. For more information contact Wastepack on 01279 620000 or help@wastepack.co.uk.Visit websiteSource: BHETA, April 2019
