Argos has reported a 1.8% decline in sales for the first half of its 2026/27 financial year, as challenging conditions in the general merchandise market continue to affect consumer spending. However, the retailer expects full-year trading profit to be in line with or ahead of last year and is continuing to expand its digital and marketplace operations.
The figures were published in Sainsbury's interim results for the 28 weeks ended 12 September 2026, ahead of the planned sale of Argos to Swift Partners.
Sales remain under pressure
Argos generated revenue of £1.95 billion during the period, compared with £1.985 billion a year earlier.
Sainsbury's attributed the decline to intense competition and weaker demand for larger-ticket products, particularly furniture, with trading also affected by the prolonged summer heatwave.
The transition of existing Argos storecard customers to a new digital financial services proposition also affected sales, despite encouraging take-up among new customers.
The results follow a 0.5% reduction in Argos sales during the first quarter, when the retailer reported growing volumes but lower average selling prices.
Despite these pressures, Sainsbury's expects Argos to deliver full-year trading profit at least in line with the previous year, supported by its ongoing programme of cost savings and operational improvements.
Marketplace expansion creates opportunities for suppliers
One of the most significant developments for suppliers is the successful launch of the Argos Marketplace.
Sainsbury's confirmed that Argos intends to continue increasing the number of third-party sellers and products available through its digital channels.
The retailer is targeting an additional 200,000 Marketplace and supplier-direct-fulfilled products by the end of its financial year.
This follows earlier investment in extending the Argos product range through supplier-direct fulfilment, which enables products to be supplied to customers without necessarily passing through the retailer's traditional stockholding model.
For suppliers of housewares, small electrical appliances, DIY and home improvement products, the expansion could create opportunities to reach Argos customers through additional routes to market.
However, suppliers will need to consider the commercial implications of different operating models, including fulfilment responsibilities, customer service, pricing, margins and potential marketplace costs.
Change of ownership expected in February 2027
The planned sale of Argos to Swift Partners, announced in July, is expected to complete by the end of February 2027, with full operational separation from Sainsbury's expected by February 2029.
Swift Partners has been established by experienced retail executives Richard Pennycook, Trevor Strain and Matt Truman, alongside investment firm True Capital.
The new owners intend to build on Argos' established brand, national distribution network and multichannel retail proposition, with a particular focus on technology, digital innovation and operational improvement.
The agreement includes arrangements to maintain Argos stores and collection points within Sainsbury's supermarkets, alongside ongoing commercial relationships involving Nectar and other services.
What does this mean for suppliers?
For BHETA members, the latest results highlight several important developments.
Although discretionary consumer spending remains under pressure, Argos continues to represent a significant route to market for suppliers across the home and general merchandise sectors.
The expansion of its Marketplace and supplier-direct offering could broaden opportunities for brands, while the proposed ownership change may lead to further developments in the retailer's commercial and operating strategy.
Suppliers should monitor the evolution of Argos' product ranges, fulfilment models and commercial terms as the business prepares for its next phase.
BHETA will continue to follow developments at Argos and across the wider UK retail market to help members understand changes that may affect their businesses.
