The first “Meet the CEO” event in the Global DIY Network’s webinar programme was held on the 21st October, with Obi boss Sergio Giroldi interviewed by John Herbert, general secretary of the international DIY retail association Edra/Ghin.
Mr. Giroldi revealed he has tested positive for Covid-19 and talked openly about the industry, focusing on Covid and digitalisation.
He confirmed that the upswing in DIY in the UK has been matched around the globe during the pandemic, as consumers focused their spend on improving their home and the trend to “cocooning”. BHETA’s view is that, supply chain issues aside, it should be a positive time for UK members to focus on international expansion and new export customers.
In further positive news for UK manufacturers, Mr. Giroldi believes there will be a significant shift to more local sourcing, with the drivers being both environmental issues and continuity of supply, with local suppliers better placed to deliver during international disruption such as pandemics. He said that Obi was increasing its product sourcing from regional manufacturers.
Mr. Giroldi was also bullish about the importance of bricks and mortar stores in the DIY environment, predicting the proportion of online sales in DIY would not exceed 35%. Obi is developing its click & collect offering with larger store collection zones and is also looking at pick-up locations removed from existing stores.
It was interesting to understand OBI’s market definition and that they do not consider Amazon to be a primary competitor: the customers OBI are targeting still want to touch, feel and collect DIY products from physical locations. Mr. Giroldi feels the physical location of OBI stores, together with a website, provides a stronger proposition that Amazon’s website only approach in their market sector.
Overall, the market is looking strong for DIY worldwide.
