Europe’s leading decorating sundries manufacturer, Bartoline Ltd has joined the British Home Enhancement Trade Association (BHETA). The privately owned family business, which dates back to 1876 is best known for paint solvents like white spirit, ready mixed and powder fillers, sugar soaps and paint strippers, as well as wood protection products, paraffin and BBQ lighting fluid.
Based in in Beverley, East Yorkshire, Bartoline employs 98 people. It was originally founded as a coal importer and exporter; but diversified into automotive and industrial lubricant blenders around 1900. It began to produce decorating products in the 1970’s as the burgeoning popularity of home DIY saw the proliferation of large multiple DIY retailers. In 1999, the company acquired wallcovering adhesive and filler manufacturer Modus Products, which enabled product expansion away from traditional solvent products into a wider array of decorating sundries.

The building of a completely new manufacturing plant in 2006 and the development of highly automated process equipment, together with many subsequent investments since has enabled an ambitious expansion plan resulting in a five-fold increase in sales within the UK through retail, wholesale and trade outlets – as well as private label. The expansion in capacity has also allowed expansion for exports which are developing at an even faster rate and include traditional export markets such as the middle east and Africa as well as Australia, Kazakhstan, Chile, Moldova and many others.
